Spring 2018 retreat in Denia Spain

Denia Spain, a charming city on the Mediterranean Coast is off the beaten track, framed by the turquoise sea and mountains. Enjoy an invigorating yoga practice in the morning, visit the market with an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, cycle in the hills, walk up to the 16th century castle with panoramic views of the city, enjoy long walks on the beach, feel the sea caress your feet. Nourish your body and soul with an evening practice in the garden at our boutique art hotel which we will have all to ourselves. We will organize hiking and cycling trips for you, or explore on your own.

What to expect at Retreat

When you allow yourself to freely experience each moment, gently resting the “you should…” of our ever vigilant inner critic’s in your suitcase (and lock it up!), a spontaneous curiosity, joy, contentment arrises. Carol and I want to facilitate this inner vacation for you on your adventure in Spain. Who knows what might come up for you? Allow yourself to be lifted up into the current of Grace, feel the flow with your bare feet.

Classes are for all levels. Beginners are welcome. Everyone will feel successful, and good. We will practice in the courtyard laced with bougainvillea. If raining, in the peaceful great room inside our intimate hotel. We hope to have the entire hotel to ourselves!

Breakfast is buffet style, with pastries, fruit and Spanish omelette.

A word about the yoga:

Please bring your own yoga mat!

Both Carol and I will offer many options so everyone feels both safe and challenged.  the morning classes will be taught by Naomi, and will be more vigorous than the evening classes which will be taught by Carol. We will conduct an early morning meditation each day before the morning class.

Friday Night Check in.

Days following will look like this. There may be some changes:

7:30-8 meditation

8:15 – 9:30am Hatha Flow with Naomi

9:30 – buffet breakfast

10:30 outing of the day

5:30pm evening yoga class with Carol.

Evenings are free. We can explore the restaurants, try out all the tapas and wine to our hearts content.

flight tips:

Although a little time consuming I booked my flight from Vancouver Island (Comox) to London, then booked the leg from London to Spain through a European Airline. If you are flying from the Lower Mainland, you will have more options than to fly into London. Amsterdam would be closer to Spain than London, so that may be an idea for you – roundtrip YVR to Amsterdam. Of course, letting one of the online “travel agents” or an actual agent do the whole trip for you is easier, as you don’t have to figure out appropriate layovers to allow for customs and such.

I booked my trip this way for three reasons. 1. It was cheaper all around. 2. I thought I’d watch how things go in Barcelona with the political situation there before booking through that city.

3. Where I start in Europe and where I end up may be different. I’d like to remain flexible. I’ll purchase my return to London once I’m in Spain.

As I imagine most of you will stay in Southern Europe longer than the 5 days of the retreat, This way of booking allows one to remain flexible, not have to go back to the original city you started in. It’s just an idea. I’’m not suggesting you do this, but I’m sharing with you what I did so you know that is an option.

Your Retreat Fairies

Both Carol and I (Naomi) have an ease and care we infuse into their teaching. Another thing we have in common is an uncontrollable urge to jump into natural bodies of water.  I met Carol through my wasband, and we have since become dear friends. We spend an inordinate amount of time talking about food for some reason, and just laughing, geeking out on yoga stuff. Life, friendship, and all the things that flow in between are to be embraced, experienced fully.

Here’s a Q&A with Carol which I love. I learned things about my dear friend I didn’t know about until reading this! When I think of Carol, I think of our Coast Mountains. I have an image of this beautiful woman sitting in silence at one of our teacher trainings, blanket draped over her shoulders, early in the morning before the day started for the rest of us. She is steady and beautiful like a mountain.

Can you tell us about your background?I have two lovely daughters and was a cake decorator by trade. As a family we enjoy camping, kayaking, scuba diving and holidays in warm places.

Fitness was never a priority with me until I was approaching my 40th birthday and decided to join a gym. I dove in with great enthusiasm and worked out daily for a little over 5 years, lifting heavy weights and doing crazy amounts of cardio.

What brought you to yoga? In the year 2000 I broke my ankle which required 2 surgeries and I could no longer do my regular fitness routine. I happened to walk by a yoga class at the gym and decided to try it out. For the first 3 months I carried my own chair into class and learned to adjust the poses to support my ankle.

I realized there was a lot more to the practice than what I was finding at the gym and began reading about yoga and searching for teachers. Eventually, I gave up the gym and dedicated my time to my yoga practice.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I decided to become a teacher because I wanted to share my love of the practice. I was amazed then, and still am amazed by the healing power of yoga!

 What do you love most about teaching? I love the people, the community, the teachers and students I meet.

What is your favorite pose? My favourite restorative pose is Supta Baddha Konasana.

 What should students expect from you? In a restorative class students should expect some gentle stretching, supported restorative poses and to be guided to a place of deep rest.

 What do you want your students to take away from your teachings I want students to learn about themselves, where they hold tension habitually and how to let it go and rest within themselves. I also want them to know that they are worthy of their own love and care.

  Proudest yoga moment? My proudest yoga moments are when my students go on to be teachers and studio owners. I am so happy to have been part of their yoga journey!

 Most embarrassing yoga moment? I once went to teach a class after a very traumatic personal event. Waiting for class to start, I sat in a forward fold with my forehead resting on a block. Somehow, I lost track of time and, when I lifted my head and looked at the clock the class was already 15 minutes late starting and all the students were sitting silently watching me.

 Favorite quote? “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about.” ― Rumi

Yoga inspiration? My favourite teacher, Christina Sell.

What is your advice for new yoga students? Be curious, have patience, keep your sense of humour and have fun.

Naomi Friesen

Can you tell us a little about your background? I was born and raised on the Japan Sea coast, in a town called Kanazawa. I was a melancholy and artistic child, but also a tom boy. I spent much time up in trees. I am the proud mother of a grown up daughter who is also my best friend and greatest inspiration.

I have been teaching movement for around 25 years now, starting back in the days of g-string aerobic outfits and leg warmers teaching high impact fitness classes, then became a personal trainer and pilates instructor before discovering the deliciousness of yoga.

What brought you to yoga? My ex husband, or wasband introduced me to yoga. He had a daily practice. I used to joke that he had yoga turrets, as he would bust out a pose at any old time. Once I lost sight of him, and there he was in the wall hook aisle at the hardware store, folded in half. I started practicing as an experiment, and was pleasantly surprised at the physical and psychological effect yoga had on me. It never stops being interesting. There are always more layers to peel back and experience.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I was already a teacher of movement. I joined in one of my wasbands YTT’s, because I wanted to share this practice with my students. I like combining the knowledge I have in biomechanics and the musculo-skeletal system as an RMT with yoga. I find it invaluable to have these skills in teaching yoga.

What do you love most about teaching? I enjoy the challenge of teaching well, and the ‘aha!’ I see on a student’s face when they find a deep experience in a pose. Also, that amazing pulsation and rhythm that happens in a well constructed and delivered class is outstanding.

What is your favorite pose? Oh boy… Right now it is Baddha uttanasana, or bound forward fold. It feels so good in my back and shoulders!

What should students expect from you? A class with a strong foundation in biomechanics. I want students to learn how to move efficiently and effectively in their bodies. Also, I like telling jokes. Students should expect some nerdiness.

What do you want your students to take away from your teachings? You are perfect just as you are. All the answers dwell within. When you come into synch with the rhythm of your breath and currents in your body, you remember that.

Proudest yoga moment? I can’t say there is one, but I feel proud when  class sequence gets people into poses that they thought were inaccessible to them.

Most embarrassing yoga moment? I started to sing a mantra, and there was a frog in my throat. It didn’t work out so well.

Favorite quote?  I like Carol’s. But also “Let the beauty of what you love, be what you do.” Also Rumi

Yoga inspiration? Marc Holzman. The ardour he has for his practice, the humility with which he shares his teaching, the skill of delivery., and his eloquence He’s a beautiful soul.

What is your advice for new yoga students? What other people think is none of your business. wink wink. Just try. And one yoga class does not represent all yoga classes. Keep trying. Even if it doesn’t look like anything is happening, consistent effort closes the gap between your current reality and potential.
